August 4 2014 marked 100 years since the start of The Great War. To mark the the moment when we went to war with Germany the country held an hour long vigil and lights were turned out and one solitary candle left on . “The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”
My partner Angie, has over the past few weeks been sewing sandbags for an installation based on the trenches of the somme, and this formed the setting for a labyrinth, at 10 pm we extinguished all the candles leaving one solitary candle lit on the top of the trench.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
